FORTEZZA DI MONTE ALTURA
Fortress, from the nineteenth century, with panoramic view to Palau.
Built at the end of the 19th century by the Piedmontese shortly after Italian unity, the fortress of Monte Altura was intended to protect the island from possible French attacks. Supported by two other military batteries, Monte Altura was to cover the west. In a panoramic position on the road that leads from Palau to Porto Rafael, the view extends to Corsica. An obligatory guided tour gives a better understanding of the aspects of daily life until the last war. In season, the fortress hosts concerts and cultural events.
