ISOLOTTO ROMA
Monument erected on the Isolotto in memory of the Italian sailors killed during the Second World War.
The highly visible monument was erected on the Isolotto in memory of the Italian sailors killed here during the Second World War. In September 1943, the anti-fascist Italy of General Badoglio signed the armistice with the Anglo-American alliance. The general ordered all the fleets of the Royal Navy to sail to the ports held by the new allies. Admiral Begamini directed his ships from Liguria to La Maddalena. He realized too late that the island was held by the Germans and his ship was sunk with 1,948 sailors on board. 1,352 of them perished.
