FORTE DI SAN GIORGIO
Fort with panoramic terrace in Santo Stefano, the first one built in La Maddalena.
Built at the end of the 18th century, it was the first fort to be erected in the archipelago. At the time, the Piedmont-Savoy decided to reinforce the military defences in the area and to create a supply base for the royal navy. Its high position allowed it to act as a lookout to protect Sardinia. It was from here that Napoleon III fired his cannonballs at the church of La Maddalena in 1859. From the terrace of the fort, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire archipelago and the northern coast of Sardinia.
