MUSEO DELL'INTRECCIO MEDITERRANEO
Museum and castle to visit in Castelsardo, offering an incredible view of the whole old town
The visit to the Basketry Museum is combined with a visit to the castle. First of all, you have to access the terrace of the ramparts which offers an incredible view of the whole old town, the sea and both sides of the coast. This is one of the most breathtaking views you can get. The fortress of Castelsardo dates back to the 12th century, when the Doria family built its high ramparts perched 114 m high. Two centuries later, Eleonora d'Arborea, married to a Doria knight, stayed here for a few years. Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated to the craft that has kept Castelsardo alive for centuries, basketry. It exhibits local and Mediterranean handicrafts made of woven plant fibres. Castelsardo basketry has its own particularities, while respecting the spiral construction, very present in Sardinia. Basketmakers use two main techniques, the twisted stitch or the fixed stitch, which allow them to draw patterns. In particular, there is a whole iconography that symbolizes the religious fact. For example, a fish symbolizes Christ, a cross symbolizes sacrifice, a lily symbolizes virginity, and so on. Basketmakers use sea hay, wheat stalks, raffia, or dried palm leaves. In addition to baskets and containers, basketry produced many tools for fishermen. Pots, nets, but also small hay boats were used for fishing at sea or in lakes.
