CHIESA SANTA CATERINA
The first Sardinian church to translate architecturally the new liturgy of the Counter-Reformation
Very close to the Duomo stands the beautiful and very pure Church of Santa Caterina dating back to the 16th century. It is the first Sardinian church to translate architecturally the new liturgy of the Counter-Reformation codified during the Council of Trent (1545-1563). The Jesuits who landed in Sardinia in 1559 began the construction of their church twenty years later. The plans devised by Father Giovanni Bernardoni were profoundly reworked by Rome. The church remains in the annals for its octagonal dome and its paintings by Bilevelt.
