BASILICA DI SAN GAVINO
Basilica representing one of the most beautiful and important Romanesque remains of the island
Built around the year 1100, the Basilica of San Gavino represents one of the most beautiful and important Romanesque remains on the island. It was erected by architects from Pisa on the site of an ancient early Christian basilica in which three martyrs were buried. Its crypt still houses the relics. The basilica also has a Byzantine tombstone and Roman sarcophagi from the 3rd-4th centuries. The original plan of this basilica without a transept is noteworthy: it does not have a façade, as the entrance is on the side.
