PARCO NATURALE REGIONALE DI PORTO CONTE
Natural park with a splendid view of the Gulf of Porto Conte
The Regional Natural Park of Porto Conte is a protected area that extends over 5,000 hectares. A tourist area for a long time, this promontory rises 326 meters above the sea and its limestone walls plunge steeply. It offers a splendid panorama on the Gulf of Porto Conte. Numerous hiking trails start from the reception center housed in a former penitentiary. The territory, mostly flat, borders the sea for 60 km: sandy beaches alternate with steep cliffs. The southern limit is the Calich lagoon, a "lung" for various animal species. 35 species of mammals and 150 species of birds have been observed. The marine birds are the most numerous, since they nest in the cliffs. To the north are Monte Doglia and the bay of Porto Conte. Inland there are the spectacular landscapes of Punta Giglio and Punta Cristallo, Porticciolo and Cala Viola, the caves of Capo Caccia and the forest of Le Prigionette, once called "Noah's Ark" because deer, Giara horses and white donkeys were introduced there.
The marine protected area of Capo Caccia: its caves are the largest karstic phenomenon in the Mediterranean. The 2,500 hectares of sea, rocky cliffs and low, sandy coasts and Isola Piana contain a real treasure trove of biodiversity, due to the large number of habitats and species found there. A paradise for divers: the most beautiful seabed in Sardinia!
