NECROPOLI DI FILIGOSA
Necropolis with 4 domus of janas dug in the tuff at the foot of a hill
This necropolis of four domus de janas (burial chambers) is an important archaeological find. Three of the tombs are dug into the tufa at the foot of a hill, while the fourth is at a higher level in the rock. Each tomb has several burial cells distributed along a corridor. At the end of the 11-meter-long corridor, we reach the first chamber. A burial bed has been built into one of the walls. It is topped by two hemispherical cups, while on the floor a large circle has been drawn with a cup in the center. This chamber leads to six others.
This pre-Urgench cemetery has great similarities with the one in Abealzu, located 60 km away. From these similarities, archaeologists have derived a culture, that of Abealzu-Filigosa, which would have developed between 2,700 and 2,400 BC. A well has been discovered on the site, containing numerous Roman potteries from the Republican and Imperial periods.
The hill of Filigosa is surmounted by the remains of an ancient nuraghe, that of Ruggiu. Much more interesting and known: the nuraghe Santa Barbara. Quite difficult to reach, it is necessary to park on the car park provided for this purpose on the SS131 (just after the exit for Macomer, in the direction of Sassari), then to climb about 600 meters. The nuraghe Santa Barbara is (despite everything!) among the most photographed for its central tower surrounded by a four-lobed bastion. The access to the inner courtyard is made by an entrance pierced in the south-east.
