SARTIGLIA
The Sartiglia cavalcade in Oristano is one of Sardinia's most incredible equestrian festivals.
In Oristano, the end of the carnival takes on a particular color. Organized by the gremi, the guilds of carpenters and farmers, the Sartiglia mixes folkloric repertoires. The festival begins with a proclamation read in Spanish in Piazza Eleonora. It continues with the dressing of the compoidori, a knight dressed as a Spanish nobleman by young women in traditional Sardinian dress. The crowd waits for him on via Duomo to attend the sortija: the rider launched at full gallop must pierce a ring placed on its course with his spear.
