CHIESA DI SAN GIOVANNI
Remarkable small church among the oldest churches in Sardinia
The remarkable little church of San Giovanni is located at the entrance of the town of the same name, on the road leading to the archaeological site of Tharros. It is one of the oldest churches in Sardinia and dates back to the beginning of the Christian era. Built in the 6th century, it was enlarged in the 9th and 10th centuries with the addition of two more bays. Its interior, barely lit by a window in the façade, reveals three barrel vaults. The church should be visited preferably at sunrise, when the rays come to caress its apse.
