BASILICA DI SANT'ANTIOCO
Basilica with a vast network of catacombs from the 2nd to the 7th century.
Behind an anonymous facade lies a remarkably beautiful, Byzantine-influenced5th-century interior (large pillars, rotunda transept and cul-de-four choir). The basilica, completed in the 12th century, is dedicated to the island's martyred patron saint, Sant'Antioco. Legend has it that Antioco, refusing to renounce his faith, was sent by the Romans to the mines of Iglesias. He fled in a tar barrel, hence his rather dull complexion. His remains are preserved beneath the altar. The visit continues without hesitation in the catacombs, a jewel!
