FORTEZZA VECCHIA
Fortress with a tower restored and transformed into a museum
Austere, the fortress of Villasimius dominates a rocky promontory that allows to embrace the eastern view of the Gulf of Cagliari. The first stones were laid in the 14th century. In the 16th century, then under the pressure of Turkish offensives, Philip II had defensive towers built along the coast. The tower of Villasimius was enlarged and reinforced. It serves as a hiding place for coral and tuna fishing boats. The tower was abandoned in 1847 when its last captain disembarked. It was restored in 1968 and turned into a museum.
