ALTOPIANO DI GOLGO
Hiking area with sheepfolds and a stone church
The altopiano of Golgo is a limestone plateau located between the sea and the mountains. You can reach it by taking a beautiful road that climbs in tight twists and turns from Baunei. Once on the altopiano, you can't see the sea, which is nevertheless very close. It is a world out of time that we discover. The pastoral activity is still present: cows, pigs and donkeys are free. A stone church whose style reminds us of the chapels with whitewashed walls in Sergio Leone's westerns still hosts religious festivals. In front of the church, next to the thousand-year-old olive trees, you will see an anthropomorphic Nuragic menhir (human head carved in the stone). Among the oaks, it is possible to stop at the edge of the Su Sterru chasm, close to small ponds (the only water points) where wild and semi-free-range animals come to drink. The altopiano of Golgo, crossed by some tracks that go north, is the starting point for hikes to Cala Goloritze and other coves. It is a stop on the famous Selvaggio Blu hiking route. Le Petit Futé had a big crush on the magical and wild (out of season) atmosphere that reigns on the plateau. Like all karst environments, the apparent aridity hides a universe that conquers every drop of water. To be discovered during a half day early in the morning or at nightfall: the chiesa di San Pietro, the olivastri millenari (thousand-year-old olive trees), Voragine di Golgo (abyss), the maschera di pietra di Golgo, the Golgo swimming pool...
