Archaeological area with remains of two groups of dwellings
It's a two-hour climb on foot to reach this prehistoric village hidden inside a chasm. The hike alone is worth the detour to discover the sumptuous scenery. There is immense beauty in the aridity of the Supramonte. The doline, whose vault has collapsed, is made up of limestone of organic origin dating back 160 to 180 million years. Man's presence in the doline dates back over 14,000 years. Excavations have also uncovered vestiges of the Nuragic civilization. Following conflicts with neighboring populations, but especially after the arrival of the Romans in Sardinia, the inhabitants of the Lanaitto valley would have deserted their villages and sought refuge in this remote area. Even so, the chances of the village having been permanently inhabited are slim. There are no water sources in the vicinity, and arable land is almost non-existent. The village consists of the remains of two groups of dwellings. The first comprises some forty round, square or rectangular huts. The second comprises some twenty rectangular huts, smaller than the first. The walls were built of large stones welded together with mud, and the roof was made of plant material. A must-see! The site is difficult to access without a guide, due to random signposting.
