Mural of Orgosolo used as a communication tool through political frescoes

Unique in its kind, the mural expression of Orgosolo is worth a visit. It appeared at the beginning of the 20th century and was first used as a communication tool by a group of anarchists. They used the walls of houses to create political frescoes intended to be seen by as many people as possible. The technique was taken up by the Resistance during the Second World War and spread to neighbouring villages. The artists took over the mode of expression to open it up to the culture, customs and traditions of Sardinia. A walk through the streets of Orgosolo becomes a silent reading of political demands as well as testimonies of daily life. Numerous representations of Sardinian shepherds or bandits are found alongside drawings of mamuthones, the masked men of the Mamoiada carnival, or of Sardinian women fetching water from the fountain. Among the most famous works are pacifist messages. A representation of Charlie Chaplin as a soldier says "Another war? No thanks"; or an old Sardinian man leaning on his cane repeats a quote from Bertold Brecht "Happy are the people who have no need of heroes". At the entrance of the village, on the road coming from Nuoro or Oliena, a painted rock representing a bandit's face is supposed to frighten any stranger entering the village. The artists continue to enrich the walls of Orgosolo with painted works, a singular open-air museum that presents the political thinking of its inhabitants.
