The metro has become the preferred means of transport for both Beijing residents and tourists. With its 17 lines, it provides access to all major tourist sites, avoiding very frequent traffic jams and overcrowding of buses.

1 is the most interesting for tourism. This long east-west cross section serves Tian'anmen Square, the Forbidden City, Wangfujing and Jianguomenwai (Silk Market and Mall The Place).

.Line 2 is a circular line, following the path of the second ring road. It serves Beijing station, the south of Tian'anmen Square, the zoo, the temple of the Lamas.

Line 4 (Daxing Line) runs through the city from north to south on the west side and serves the Summer Palace in particular.

Line 5 crosses the city from north to south on the east side, serving the Lamas Temple and the Temple of Heaven.

Line 6 follows the line of line 1 but further north (along the 2nd ring road). It serves the central lake district and Nanluoguxiang, as well as the Dongdaqiao stations south of the Workers' Stadium.

Line 7 is the counterpart of line 6 but further south.

Line 8 runs from inside the 2nd ring road (especially Nanluoguxiang) to the north, serving the former Olympic area. The line plans an extension further south to serve Wangfuqing, Tianqiao and the south.

Line 9 is the counterpart of line 5 to the west. It serves the West station in particular.

Line 10 follows the route of the third ring road and links all the other lines serving the north and west. It serves the university district and the Summer Palace and the entire southern part of the city, as well as the Sanlitun district.

Line 13 (and not line 11 as expected!) starts from the northeast corner of line 2 and makes a wide loop northward before joining the northwest corner of line 2. It serves the university district in particular.

Line 14 (west) serves the greater west of the city.
The stations are: Zhangguozhuang (张郭庄) ; Garden Expo (园博园) ; Dawayao (大瓦窑) ; Guozhuangzi (郭庄子) ; Dajing (大井) ; Qilizhuang (七里庄) and Xiju (西局).
Line 14 (east) serves the eastern part of the city.

Line 15 serves the far north-east of the city, including Wangjing, via the university district.

The Airport Line connects the international airport with the Dongzhimen metro and bus station.

Finally, four other lines (Batong Line, Fangshan Line, Chanping Line and Yizhuang Line) that are of little use to travellers are completing the large picture of Beijing's metro network.
