Located on the Olympic site, the stadium was the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics in 2008. With an area of 258,000 m ², with a capacity of 91,000 seats, the «bird nest» is the work of the Herzog & de Meuron group of architects, and of the Chinese consultant Ai Weiwei. Its construction began with great pomp in December 2003 to finish in 2008. It is 330 m long, 220 m wide and 69 m high. The cost of construction is estimated at EUR 325 million. It is now used to host major sports and cultural events in the municipality.
