MAO SHRINE
Built at Mao's death in September 1976, this mausoleum of cubic architecture is erected on the north-south axis of the ancient Imperial City. But contrary to tradition, the door opens north, facing Tian 'anmen Square, Mao's work. You will immediately notice the impressive tail of Chinese visitors who each day come to see the remains of the great national leader. The building was transformed into a museum in 1983 with exhibition halls on the life of Mao Zedong and the great contemporary heroes: Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Liu Shaoqi… The centerpiece is of course Mao's body itself, which rests intact, in a crystal coffin. A solemn ambience, sieved light and red carpet.
Forbidden photos (and therefore we must leave his camera outside…) and silence to respect in this national temple. The ensemble was renovated in 2007.
