At the entrance, you will be greeted by a slogan glorifying the fight against American imperialism, as well as two Mao slogans from the Cultural Revolution which call on the population to dig deeply, prepare food and be prepared for a war without mercy. There are also old photos of Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin. The Beijing underground was dug in 1969 under Mao's orders so that the entire population of the capital could find shelter in less than three minutes in the event of air raid on the capital. It was border incidents with the USSR along the river Love that prompted Mao to grow underground cities under every major city in China. In that of Beijing, water, food and weapons were stored in sufficient quantities to hold four whole months. There had even been a ventilation system that would have allowed the population to protect themselves from chemical attacks and radioactive fallout. It is not clear what the extent of these galleries is, but it is proven that they connect all the areas of Beijing, Xidan and Xuanwumen to Qiamen and Au district and even to the hills of the west. However, the current foundations of the towers of the Modern New Beijing have certainly damaged much of these underground waves. In the remaining galleries, you can find signs that show underground locations on the surface. For example, it is easy to find out about Beijing station, the Temple of the Sky, the Forbidden City and even Tian'tiananmen square. We know from a reliable source that there is a road (wide enough for two vehicles to cross there) that would allow Party leaders to go from their headquarters in Zhong Nan Hai to the People's Palace. Urban legend wants the last part of line 1 (up to Pingguoyuan station) to be an old gallery…
