ST. IGNATIUS CATHEDRAL OF XUJIAHUI
Established by the Company of Jesus in 1847, the St Ignace Cathedral now visible was built between 1906 and 1910. The nef is 79 m long, the two towers culminate at 50 m. Closed during the Cultural Revolution until 1979, the cathedral is now in full operation: The 2,500 places are almost all taken every Sunday, and the Christmas mass brings together some 12,000 loyal believers every year. A few minutes on foot, we visit the tomb of Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), a senior Ming official converted to Catholicism by Matteo Ricci. He translated many books of mathematical and meteorological sciences. Jesuit benefactor, Xu, renamed Paul, was the first Catholic to introduce religion in Shanghai. He offered many land and property to the Church.
