Established in 242, it was rebuilt many times after numerous destruction during the wars. It is the oldest temple in Shanghai and one of the largest Buddhist sites in the city. The current buildings date back to the 1875 th century, rebuilt between 1899 and 1860 after the Taiping rebellion in. The whole preserved the layout of Zen temples, adopted under Song. The Longhua pagoda is now separated from the temple by a road. Dated 345, then rebuilt over the centuries, it resisted the numerous fires and floods.
