The Great Library of Shanghai was inaugurated in December 1996. It is the second largest in China after the Beijing National Library and one of the ten largest in the world: 3,1 ha, 13 million books and manuscripts, some of which have more than 1 400 years of history, 20 reading rooms (Chinese, foreign, electronic, CD-Rom and Internet).

Peu de choses accessibles pour les touristes
La Grande Bibliothèque de Shanghai est un bâtiment, situé dans l'ancien concession française, qui n'a rien d'exceptionnel d'un point de vue architectural. A l'intérieur, on trouve notamment un petit Starbucks et quelques salles avec des livres anciens mais il faut être adhérent pour avoir accès à la majeure partie des collections, donc le lieu a peu d'intérêt pour les touristes.
