This rather massive neoclassical edifice was a gift from the Soviet Union to the Chinese friend, offered in 1955. Its design was designed in imitation of the Exhibition Centre in Beijing. The Shanghaiens, never short of imagination, ruthlessly dubbed him "Russian wedding cake".
