It is one of the five famous gardens on the outskirts of Shanghai. This set set up on the edge of the Daying River in 1745, under Emperor Qianlong's Reign, is christened from the famous verse to calligrapher Wang Xizhi des Jin: " Cuts of wine floating on a ribbed water " (meaning: poets drink wine and create poems while admiring the landscape). The garden is organized around a central water plan animated by a rockeries set of Taihu lake.
