In a traditional Naxi house renovated in the old town. Naxi was traditionally a paraagan company, and men had every opportunity to practise calligraphy and music, while women had daily chores and work in the field. The troupe consists of a number of these venerable gentlemen, some people of a certain age, who were the guardians of a music that was referred to as "living fossil". Specialists still discuss the origins of this music, but it is thought that it is a mixture of music from Tang and Song dynasties. Mr. Xuan Ke, the director of the troupe, provides explanations in English and Chinese during the show. In this orchestra, mostly composed of stringed instruments, appears a lute of 400 years, an sheng mouth organ, a zither, an old erhu, a dizi flute that produces a fragile and strange sound that comes from the bottom of the ages. The music is punctuated by a sound gong and suspended cast iron plates.
