It took over 60 years to build this huge complex of 100 buildings covering 6 ha of land. The buildings are inspired by the different Naxi, Bai, Tibetan and Han architectures. But the decline of the Mu family led to the abandonment of the residence, destroyed by the 1996 earthquake. Rebuilt after that date and opened to the public in February 1999, the present Mu house is certainly very far from the original work, which the geographer emeritus Xu Xiake compared to the Forbidden City of Beijing, but nevertheless deserves a visit.
