Established in 1982 to commemorate Lin Zexu (1785-1850), a national hero distinguished by an exemplary administration (reducing taxes on cereals, restoring the course of the Yellow River) and above all for his military victories and his will to eradicate opium from 1839. The memorial is located on the site of a former temple built in 1905 in honour of the illustrious official.
