SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL
She rises on Yide Lu, parallel to the river, east of Renmin Lu. The Cathedral is a place of Catholic worship built by Guillemin (1814-1886) of the Foreign Missions of Paris, Apostolic Prefect of Guangdong, French Jesuit architect. The church's mount of granite greatly impressed the Chinese who called it Shishi ("the stone building"). The building was established on the former premises of the Governor of the Provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi under the Qing. The land was conceded to the Jesuits after the signing of the Treaty of Tianjin. The construction of the cathedral began in 1863 and was completed 25 years later. Shishi is China's largest cathedral; still active today, it is well known throughout Southeast Asia. The masses on weekdays and on Sunday and parties are in cantonese, Mandarin and Korean. There is a mass in English on Sunday at 3:30 p. m.
