MAUSOLEUM OF THE 72 MARTYRS
This monument was erected in 1918 in memory of the dead of the March 29, 1911 insurgency. The insurgents were supposed to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. The second attempt will culminate in October 1911, the date of the founding of the Chinese Republic in Southern China. Overseas Chinese funds from around the world helped build this monument to the dead of a new style for the time. There is a mixture of Western and Chinese values and aesthetic symbols, such as a triumphal arch, a bell, a statue of freedom at the top, flanked by Chinese lions. The entrance to the mausoleum bears an inscription of Sun Yat-Sen meaning «Eternity of great spirits».
