THE GŒTHE MEMORIAL
Goethe Memorial, a cast of the bust created by French sculptor David d'Angers recalling the face of the German poet Goethe
The former imperial-style guardhouse dating from 1820 was transformed in 1961 to house the memory of the famous German poet Goethe. A cast of the bust by French sculptor David d'Angers shows his face. In 1770, Goethe was a young man in Alsace. Seduced by the fresh Frédérique Brion, daughter of the Sessenheim pastor, he composed the Sesenheimer Lieder, some of which, like Heidenröslein, were set to music by Franz Schubert. The restored barn in the street behind the memorial is the last vestige of the presbytery.
