This «Relais et Châteaux» establishment occupies the inside of the fortress da Barra, built in the th century by the Portuguese to defend the inner harbour against attacks by pirates and enemy Western fleets. One hundred years later, a chapel was built inside its walls, dedicated to São Tiago, the patron saint of the Portuguese army.
