SANTO AGOSTINHO CHURCH
This building was the first church in Macau to offer a service in English
Founded in 1586 by Spanish Augustinians, it is one of the oldest in Macau. After their departure in 1712, a famine hit the city, and the locals believed that the interruption of the annual procession in honor of Christ was the cause. They demanded that the rite be resumed. In the past, during heavy rains, the priests used palm leaves to reinforce the roof. Seen from afar, these leaves appeared to be dragon whiskers floating in the wind, hence its nickname Long Song Miu (Temple of the Dragon with Long Whiskers).
