PENHA CHURCH
Chapel remains an important religious center for the Macanese community
The first chapel was founded here in 1622 by the passengers and sailors of a ship that had narrowly survived a perilous voyage. Penha Church has since served as a place of pilgrimage for those about to embark on a dangerous voyage. In front of the church is a replica of the grotto at Lourdes. The hill offers fine views of Taipa and the first towns on the Chinese mainland opposite. A fort was built on the hill in the 17th century, and is now a luxury hotel with swimming pool and restaurant, the Pousada de Sao Tiago.
