PENHA CHURCH
A first chapel was founded here in 1622 by the passengers and sailors of a ship that survived little to a dangerous journey. The Penha church has since served as a pilgrimage for those who are going to embark on a dangerous journey. In front of the church is a replica of the cave of Lourdes. The hill offers beautiful views of the two Taipa bridges and the first cities on the mainland of China. In the hill, a fort was built in the eighteenth century, now transformed into a 5-star luxury hotel with swimming pool and restaurant, the Pousada de Sao Tiago. Known today as the chapel Notre-Dame de Penha, it remains an important religious center for the Macedonian community.
