SÃO LOURENÇO CHURCH
The church's richly decorated interior features a turquoise-painted wooden ceiling and white and gold beams
Macau's most elegant church was originally built of wood in the 1560s, replaced by adobe in 1618, and finally rebuilt in stone in 1803. The façade features an imposing Baroque structure. The interior features a turquoise ceiling and gilded white beams, from which large candelabras hang. One of the two towers served as a prison for ecclesiastics. Proudly enthroned on its pedestal between the houses, surrounded by a peaceful garden lined with palm trees, it is one of Macau's finest surprises.
