LEAL SENADO
Built in 1784, this building is one of the finest examples of Portuguese architecture in Macao
The Leal Senado, Macau's jewel in the crown, stands proudly on the emblematic Senado Square. Dating from 1784, this building is a remarkable example of Portuguese neoclassical architecture. Its name, "Loyal Senate", bears witness to the Macanese's attachment to their sovereignty, refusing to recognize Spanish authority during the 60-year occupation in the 18th century. A devastating typhoon in 1874 necessitated its reconstruction, which explains the neoclassical façade.
Inside, a large hall welcomes visitors and is adorned with splendid azulejos, blue and white tiles evocative of Portuguese craftsmanship. Access to the hall is via imposing wooden doors. On the first floor, an art gallery regularly exhibits temporary works, bringing a contemporary touch to this historic space.
A magnificent stone staircase leads to an interior garden, a true haven of peace, while providing access to the Senate and library. The wood-panelled Senate Hall preserves Macau's famous motto: "Macau, city in the name of God, there is none more loyal", a tribute to the region's unique cultural identity.
The library, opened in 1929, is also worth a visit for its elegant rooms, with walls lined with antique books and a breathtaking view of the square. The Leal Senado is one of the most interesting buildings on Senado Square, and well worth a visit. It is a symbol of Macau's history, culture and resilience.
