TAIPA HOUSES MUSEUM
Museum showing how Portuguese families lived in the early century.
The Taipa Houses Museum, located in Taipa, is an emblematic example of Portuguese colonial architecture. These five houses, built in 1921, were once the residences of high-ranking Portuguese officials and Macanese families. The houses, shaded by majestic banyan trees, line the Avenida da Praia and plunge us into a bygone era. The contrast is made all the more striking by the fact that a large marsh separates them from the Cotai Strip and the world's most extravagant casinos. Recognized for its architectural value in 1992, the site was transformed into a museum in 1999, and in 2016, a redevelopment project gave a new cultural dimension to each of these buildings, such as:
The Macanese Living Museum recreates the daily life of Macanese families, born of unions between Portuguese, Chinese and other Asian peoples. The museum offers an immersion into their unique lifestyle and cultural mix.
The Exhibition Gallery regularly organizes events and exhibitions, promoting cultural exchanges between Macau and other countries.
The Creative Casa is a space for cultural promotion, where handicrafts and publications are displayed and sold.
The houses are regularly undergoing renovation, so some may be closed to the public. After your visit, we recommend crossing the marsh via the pleasant wooden footbridge to the Cotai Strip and casinos, a peaceful stroll offering a unique contrast.
