To the north of the old town, the temple gives in a ruelle that opens on Tuanjie read. It was built in the th century to host the statue of Jowo. It now contains the Akshobya Buddha, reported from Nepal by Brikuti. In 1474, Kounga Döndrup, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, organizes meetings of the lower tantric college (gyu-tö) in the hall. See Jokhang.
Originally Chinese style, it burned and was rebuilt in Tibetan style. It hosts about 500 monks. You can visit it… and you can even run its many prayer mills.
