The monastery derives its name from the vast plain located about 8 km from Tsetang on the road to Chonggye. It was founded in the th century by the Indian master Candragomin. In the th century, Atisha spent a few years in a hermitage. The monastery suffered greatly, but its frescoes commissioned by the 13 th Dalai Lama are superb and have mysteriously been spared by the Cultural Revolution.
