Train is a good way to move. From here you can easily reach Xi'an (12 to 14 hours drive), Golmod (7 hours drive), Lanzhou (3 to 5 hours drive), Beijing (21 hours drive but 7 hours fast) and even Urumqi (10 hours drive).
Beware, however, tickets are difficult to find for the same day (or you will have to queue for very long). So if you had to pass through Xining, think about reserving your ticket before you arrive.
