The canton of Alajuelita celebrates its patron saint, Santo Cristo de Esquipulas. It is the longest patron saint festival in the country.

The patronal feasts of Alajuelita are celebrated each year in honor of the Black Christ of Esquipulas, a sculpture of Jesus Christ displayed in the Basilica of Esquipulas in Guatemala. In Costa Rica, the National Shrine of the Canton of Alajuelita gathers thousands of faithful and pilgrims from many Central American countries. The celebration begins very early with a mass and then the procession crosses the streets decorated for the occasion with colorful ribbons. The day usually ends with an open-air feast in the church gardens.
