The Basílica is the most famous church in the country, where pilgrims pay homage to the patron saint, Our Lady of the Angels, more simply called La Negrita. A statuette with her effigy was discovered in 1635 by a young peasant girl, and the miraculous healings that followed were at the origin of the pilgrimage that every year on August 2 sees hundreds of devotees walking from San José (22 km) and covering the last meters on their knees.
