Celebrated on July 16, the feast of the Virgen del Mar (Virgin of the Sea) takes place in Miramar, Chacarita, Montes de Oro and Puntarenas. For the occasion, the fishermen go out to sea to pray to the Virgen del Mar, named "Patroness of the Diocese of Puntarenas". They ask the Virgin to protect them every time they leave the port to go fishing at sea. Every July 16, a boat decorated with flowers leads the procession of the Virgin in the Gulf of Nicoya.
