RESERVA BIOLÓGICA TIRIMBINA
Biological reserve located on the banks of the Sarapiqui River, a wildlife refuge in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui
The Tirimbina Biological Reserve is located on the banks of the Sarapiquí River. It covers 345 hectares of pre-mountainous rainforest, in one of the areas with the highest biodiversity in the world. It is accessed by crossing an impressive suspension bridge. This wildlife sanctuary, administered by a non-profit organization, is dedicated to primary forest conservation, scientific research and ecological education for students from eight rural schools in the area. One third of the reserve is open to the public (9 kilometers of trails), the rest is reserved for researchers. It is highly recommended to be accompanied by a naturalist guide to appreciate all the treasures. Several activities are offered, from the discovery of the fauna and flora in general to more specific circuits, day or night, such as the observation of birds (54% of the 875 national species have been recorded here), frogs or bats. The chocolate tour is a must. You can learn about the whole process of cocoa cultivation and the artisanal manufacture of chocolate, with tasting of course! The activities are well organized, with professional and passionate guides. If you wish to stay in the reserve to better enjoy the activities offered early in the morning, several accommodations are available: in dormitory for 4 people, in standard or deluxe double room.
