CHAPTER HILL (KÁPTALANDOMB) AND BASILICA (BAZILIKA)
This hill is the historic heart of the city. It has been "restructured" in a museum complex comprising 6 different places (the basilica and its tower; its museum; the exhibition Apor Vilmos - bishop of Can martyred by the Nazis - dedicated to the Hungarian martyrs; the Gothic library and treasure of the Diocese; the museum of the Szent László Látogatóközpont devoted to the history of Can Diocese; and finally a museum dedicated to the sculptor Ferenc Lebő). From the tower of the basilica, we have a panoramic view of the old town and the new city.
The basilica, in flamboyant baroque style, rises majestically at the top of the hill. The frescoes and peinture painting are by Franz-Anton Maulbertsch, one of the best representatives of Germanic Baroque. The famous icon of the Virgin Virgin comes from Ireland. According to legend on St. Patrick's Day, three hundred years ago, the icon was crying blood tears. In Hédeváry Chapel one of the most jealously guarded treasures is the bust, in Hermes, of King Szent László I (Ladislas I), an astonishing masterpiece of the Hungarian goldsmith.
This reliquary represents the pinnacle of this art in medieval times in Hungary. Can is the city with the largest number of relics in the country; more than 170 monuments and relics are registered there.
