CHURCH OF THE GOAT (KECSKE-TEMPLOM), KÁPTALANTEREM
The church, which closes the square to the south, is one of the most famous churches of the city, which counts twelve. The church of the Goat was built between 1280 and 1300 by Franciscan monks. Three royal coronations took place there, including that of Ferdinand III in 1625. The church miraculously sans without major damage to the earthquake of 1590 and the great fire of 1676. In 1787, following the dissolution of the Franciscan order, the monastery was closed and a part was converted into a hay barn. In 1802, the church was able to resume its primary role. When monks had permission to return, it was the Benedictine monks who settled there.
Despite its numerous restorations, the ship with three naves still retains its original Gothic style. The elegant tower is one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic clocher in Hungary. Several styles of architecture overlap inside the church. Notice the baroque marble pulpit and the Széchenyi tomb.
A Benedictine monastery is adjacent to the church, its ambulatory leads to the magnificent chapter of the chapter (Káptalanterem), also Gothic, which is used for special art exhibitions. With its columns, capitals and frescoes, it is a Gothic monument of the most interesting. An interactive exhibition in several languages has just been installed, which complemented the visit.
You have to bypass the Church of the Goat, to go behind the building in Új utca (rue Neuve), which is the oldest in the city. It was called the Rue des Juifs until the expulsion of the Jews of Sopron in 1526 (they could only return until the th century).
