The Jewish community of Balassagyarmat is one of the oldest in the country. In the mid th century, it constituted nearly 40% of the city's population. Deutsch Áron Dávid, the instigator of the 1868 Jewish Congress, was the rabbi. It's no surprise that Balassagyarmat has a remarkable Jewish cemetery. Michel Gyarmathy, the famous director of the Parisiennes Bergères Parisiennes in the early th century, is buried there.
