CASTLE (EGRI VÁR)
The construction of the medieval fortress of Eger, which occupies a strategic position dominating the entire city, began from the beginning of the th century. During the following centuries, it underwent multiple transformations. In 1552, strengthened towers, the fortress of Eger was the last strategic point in the fight against the Turks, which already occupied almost all Hungary. The combatants and the population of Eger, forty times fewer than the Turkish army who assiégeait them, became heroes, symbols for Hungarians of love of the homeland. Their heroic struggle was described by the Hungarian writer Géza Gárdonyi (1863-1922) in his book Les Stars d'Eger, well known to Hungarian schoolchildren.
