KATONA JÓZSEF THEATRE (KATONA JÓZSEF SZÍNHÁZ)
Overlooking a square, next to the main square, the small municipal theatre building is a real baroque jewel. It was built at the end of the last century for the celebration of the millennium in an eclectic style by two Viennese, Hermann Hellmer and Ferdinand Hellmer, architects of the European theatres among the most famous of the time. József Katona, born in Kecskemét, is the author of the drama drama Bánk Bán. This piece, put in music by Ferenc Erkel, became the favourite opera of Hungarians.
In front of the theatre is a very beautiful Baroque monument, the Trinity column, built after the plague epidemic of 1739-1740.
