The cathedral is the most important monument in the city between 1912 and 1929. Its interior decoration is sumptuous. Extending over 12 000 m ² (equivalent to Saint Mark Square in Venice), the of this majestic cathedral is bordered by the Gothic tower Dömötör, the Orthodox Church, and the pantheon of statues. It is this place of the (Dóm tér) that hosts the festival of the Musical Summer. Szeged's most important event is the International Theatre Festival, held in the open air since 1931 (seating 6 000 spectators seated), in the magnificent surroundings of the imposing façade of the cathedral, framed and dominated by two huge towers.
