SZEGED SYNAGOGUE (ZSINAGÓGA)
The Jews settled at Szeged in the th century, forming a community of artisans and traders. The synagogue - one of the most beautiful in the country - was built in 1903 in an eclectic style by the famous synagogues architect, Lipót Bauman. With a capacity of up to 1 340 faithful, this building, whose structure resembles lace with its turrets and pinnacles, is a characteristic monument of Szeged. The impression of harmony that emerges is underlined by its white, blue and gold ornamentation.
The interior decoration of the dome symbolizes the Universe, the 24 columns the 24 hours of the day. The desk is made of marble from Jerusalem, the ark of the Convention is made of acacia wood from the Nile region. The trade mark of the Tisza is inscribed on the façade in Hebrew and Hungarian.
